After a nuclear war, society breaks down into two groups, the evil Euraks and the rebel Federation. Jamie is She's from Atlanta. She's come to Brooklyn to visit her friend Samantha, but she can't find her. Jamie tries calling, but Samantha's phone is dead. Jamie meets Charlie when she asks him for directions. Nothing to do and nothing but time leads them to bowls of coleslaw, footraces in the park, art shows, and after parties. Written by Aaron Katz. A random stranger, Charlie, is asked for directions, and he subsequently offers to let her stay at his scruffy apartment.
The camera follows the pair throughout the next day while they try to contact Jamie's pal, take a walk in the park, visit a friend of Charlie's to retrieve a hat, go to a gallery opening and then on to a party.
The film's minimalist plot is thematically similar to Richard Linklater's "Before Sunrise", but its production values are far more basic and it lacks the mythic element. The two protagonists are neither as articulate nor charismatic as Linklater's Viennese lovers, and their relationship is considerately less intense.
However it becomes fascinating to observe a friendship develop through commonplace activities and banal conversation. Much of the film's success is due to Erin Fisher's easygoing Southern charm as Jamie - her beautiful eyes and enigmatic amused smile gradually dismantle Charlie's slacker exterior to expose a genuine person worthy of her affection.
If anybody cares to give an even break to a film lacking the usual dramatic elements, it could provide some subtle pleasures. Looking for something to watch? Could not have seen anything better as the leaves dance with the summer wind outside of my window. Review by G. Shumway 3. This was an enjoyable time as I was very happy watching the lead actors vibe off each other. A kind of benevolent voyeurism. I don't think it came close to fellow core-mumbler Andrew Bujalski's early film Funny Ha Ha in terms of linking the low-key narrative to wider societal resonance.
In fact the more you think about it, the core meet-cute is a little far-fetched. And in the idea of casually being unemployed and being able to afford real estate in major city like NY is also hard to believe. My favourite scene, and it will be your's as well, was when Jamie woke up Charlie with that big toy crane.
Review by thatbruno. I'm fascinated by cities; not so much by landmarks but by the everyday people and places behind the images. The only way a movie set in New York City could be named "Quiet City" is if we shift the foucs from Times Square and Central Park and into the small but alive and often unseen neighborhoods of Brooklyn.
This is mumblecore done right; the characters are relatable and the dialogue is so awkward you can't help think it's real which it likely is. Jamie and Charlie meet in a plausible, even mundane way, but the result is stronger than fiction as the real-world magic of openess to the unknown kicks in. Joseph W. Angel and his crew just did it again! They just finished the last touches on the window installation for my formerly noisy apartment on 10th and 23rd Street here in West Chelsea.
Not only were they early for the job, they were polite, capable and very experienced. The interactions with the door staff, building super and porters as professional. And they left me with a pin drop quiet apartment to boot! BW Sollomon. I never even knew soundproof windows were a thing that existed. My friend used this company and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. I stay over quite a lot and can tell the difference. The outside noise has been reduced along with the draft.
Sarah Ro. I am so pleased with Citiquiet Soundproof Windows and highly recommend this company. I had a great experience with every staff member my project coordinator, the scheduler, the entire install crew and owner Michael. The replacement of windows and sliding doors has made a huge difference in eliminating outside noise and keeping the interior temperature moderate.
This is such a good investment. Thank you, Citiquiet! Katrina Goguen. Beautiful replacement windows and a pain free experience. To say CitiQuiet is amazing would be an understatement. We had all of the windows in our house replaced by him and his crew. Michael was easy to contact always. He is so knowledgeable and very hard working. He came over to measure everything and went over prices with me right then! I had consulted with about 7 other companies before I met CitiQuiet.
They all left and sent me a quote days later. Ironically, it took a lot of people to make sounds this soft. The quiet global city has been one of the most unique experiences of lockdown. Many city dwellers have never experienced such a thing before: stripped of traffic and construction, with limited passers-by and an increase in birds and natural sounds, our cities became cleaner and quieter this past spring. Now as pollution, construction and roadkill have begun to return, some of us gaze back on those golden mornings during which we could sleep unencumbered.
Her piano is warm and welcoming, at times even ebullient. Are these the woods that surround the city, or a parable of the modern condition?Trumpet part for Aaron Copland's "Quiet City", copied out and annotated by Roger Voisin for use in performance.
