Please try again later. Verified Purchase. I have listened to 3 of the discs so far. Right now I am listening to Disc 18 with Liebestraum nos ; Deux Legendes and the six etudes based on the 24 caprices of Paganini. I am enjoying every note of these compositions. The recordings are superb and are taken from the Deutsche Grammophon and Decca catalogue. I don't know if this boxed set will be back in print again. Unfortunately I believe I bought the last one for sale here on Amazon.
It is worth the purchase. I hope it gets back in stock. There was a problem loading comments right now. Showing 0 comments. Sort by: Newest Oldest.
Wonderful collection! One person found this helpful. If you know anything about music, most especially piano, then nothing need be said about Liszt. This particular collection I really enjoy.
It includes his symphonies, symphonic poems, solo piano pieces, organ pieces These works are exquisitely performed by some very talented musicians. Even, or especially, if you don't know much about Liszt or his music, I highly recommend this set. Astounding Liszt compilation! Various quality artists that interpret Liszt exceptionally well. Recommend to all into his music and style. Well worth the investment. This is a great compliation of Liszt's works.
The pamphlet included is a great guide to the collection. Anyone who is a fan of this composer will enjoy volume. Part of Liszt's Tribute in the Bicentennial Year This Liszt bicentennial year has been well represented with the release of at least three mega box sets so far: The first one early on in was the release of the Leslie Howard ninety nine disc megalith of all known piano music.
Liszt: The Complete Piano Music The second one was the Brilliant Liszt Portrait, which many classical music fans here scarfed up when Amazon erroneously according to Amazon, at least and mistakenly under priced it together with a half dozen other Brilliant Classics releases.
This box set is more of a hastily thrown together pastiche, more of a deeper than superficial incursion into the Liszt oeurve rather than a genuine attempt at completion. Physically, the box is enclosed in a cardboard cube with cardboard not cheap white paper sleeves.
Each one has the distinction of being priced at a little under one hundred dollars. Disappointingly, unlike, those two more generous predecessors, there are a substantial number of discs here in the set which clock in at under an hour, which is inconsiderate, bordering on being almost inexcusable and unforgivable in this day and age.
The sound of the discs is good to excellent. There are several sides to Liszt's complicated artistic genius which are represented with this box set. His neglected oratorio Christus is neglected here, too, and it is not included. Here, an insatiable collector has to supplement elsewhere with perhaps Rilling on Hanssler. Liszt: Christus Another item of some disappointment here in this set is the absence of Liszt's Beethoven Symphony transcriptions, considering that DG undertook inclusion of a considerable number of Liszt's keyboard transcriptions at all.
The collector will have to look elsewhere and supplement his collection accordingly with either the Howard Hyperion megalith or he might consider the very fine Naxos set. Beethoven Symphonies Nos. Allegro maestoso 2. Quasi adagio - Allegretto vivace - Allegro animato 3. Allegro marziale animato Piano Concerto No. I paid only Great variety and perfomances including compositions by Ogdon himself. I remember hearing Ogdon's recording of Chopin solo piano back in the early seventies and thinking that it was the most bizarre performance I had ever heard.
Back then, of course, Rubenstein's Chopin recordings were my standard, and so I disregarded Ogdon as not my type of pianist or performer. How stupid I was, back then!
Now I understand! In those early days I was studying Spanish literature, primarily Golden Age stuff, and didn't get around to Romanticism until I was a newly minted PhD and at my first teaching post. I always used Rubenstein's recording of Chopin's Etude Op. John Ogdon's performance conveys exactly what I was trying to communicate to my students.
I was unaware of Mr. Ogdon's mental health issues until after hearing this recording, but I believe he certainly had a special insight into the Romantic psyche, confirmed by many of the other recordings of Romantic pieces contained in this collection. Ogdon also had a great talent with contemporary, 20th-Century music, exemplified by his recordings of Bartok, TIppett, Shostakovich, Davies, and his own compositions.
Despite the fact that many of the recordings in EMI's new Icon box set series have been excellently remastered, I have restrained myself from buying too many of them, even though the price is right, because I would simply be replacing way too much in my classical music collection.
I'm not all about the latest, greatest gadget or upgrade -- just give me the music! However, that wasn't a problem for me with this John Ogdon set, as I don't own lots of this pianist's recordings, plus so much of this collection is receiving its debut on CD. It took me weeks just to listen to all 17 discs once, let alone to try and begin analyzing the music contained within, but from the onset I must say I was impressed by all of the obscure works Ogdon tackles, some his own compositions and many more penned by his friends, colleagues and teachers.
For someone whose recording career only lasted around a decade, Ogdon commanded a vast and varied repertoire. But orchestral works only account for about a third of this set, with a half-dozen discs here featuring lesser known solo piano pieces by well-known composers, and at least three more discs showcasing works by composers most people had never even heard of before Ogdon shared them with the public.
I am admittedly naive about these treasured recordings of compositions by Ogdon's contemporaries, and it is these works that I particualrly look forward to listening to more and digesting in the years to come -- at first listen they are awe-inspiring!
It's also nice not to have to sell ALL my old Ogdon discs. Vladimir Feltsman. Amsterdam, Vol. Karel Ancerl. Bella Davidovich. Celebrate Rachmaninov. Great Composers: Rachmaninoff. Homage To Victor De Sabata. Victor de Sabata. Queen Elisabeth Music Competition Vol.

E ancor' Spread out over 17 CDs, it contains some truly big-name artists - Argerich, Pollini, Barenboim, and Ashkenazy - and a few you've probably never heard of.
The majority of the set's nine volumes contain some music newly produced for this undertaking, and a few items Chopin's songs, for instance were recorded specifically for this collection. A well-illustrated book is included - it contains an essay, dateline, and illustrations - and each volume in the set gets its own liner notes. The music? It varies from great to less than great, but most of it is worth hearing. Those accustomed to Rubinstein's readings of the Mazurkas will find those played by Jean-Marc Luisada less fluid and lacking Rubinstein's power.
Chopin's songs, seldom heard and filled with elements of Polish folk dances and the less-than-stellar lyrics of the composer's friend Stefan Witwicki, get a college try here by soprano Elzbieta Szmytka.
They sound as good as you'll hear anywhere if you can find them. But, really, the entire collection is solid. CD 1 - Symphonies Nos. Sexteto op. CD 81b 20 - Quinteto op. Cuartetos de cuerda op.
