The band had previously worked with the producer Phil Wainman on prior singles, but had been dissatisfied with the results, critiquing his production as too "poppy" and polished, and sought a recorded sound for the album that resembled the band's live performances. Frontman Billy Idol suggested Rushent for the role as he had been impressed with his recent work with The Stranglers. The album was recorded during one week, with many of the songs being completed in one take.
Bassist Tony James wrote most of the lyrics, with Idol composing the music. Andrews and drummer Mark Laff finished the songs by adding instrumental parts. But it was great as we felt completely at home, we just plugged in and played great and it sounded great. We were pissed, and did it at midnight, that's the only way we could have possibly recorded that track. He just went mad, we just all sat there in awe as he went crazy playing that solo.

These songs were originally released only on the backsides of 45 singles. So it's a very nice bonus that they are included. THAT version of the band released an album titled "Kiss me Deadly" which is good but has a very different sound. The Kiss Me Deadly album is actually the 4th Generation X album, but only the 3rd available to the public. I agree it's disappointing the Chrysalis US version is not currently available, but it's still tough not to give this issue 5 stars.
Just re-order the songs and add one of the inferior versions of Gimme Some Truth and you are good to go with a classic that is well over the 5 star threshold. The thing that makes this early version of Gen X so great is the balance they achieve as a band. This is a guitar dominated record. I don't care that Idol and James wrote the tracks, Bob Andrews slashes his way to the front of band and Idol's singing while quite prominent is still appropriately contained and succinct.
Execution and attitude are everything with this format and given his annoying tendencies, keeping Idol constrained within the band is key. The band even provides some excellent backing vocals which is also a nice way of keeping Idol's excessive and distasteful style in check. That said, all 4 members execute perfectly on this record, and it still sounds as fresh today as always.
Everybody just feels embarassed. The band recedes into the roll of backing Idol as a suffocating front man who is most comfortable on MTV. Another great example of the band still kicking butt is the first album tracks featured on Live in Sheffield which is available in MP3 format and on music services.
The bands smashes through their early tracks and the guitar work is as rough and dominant as ever. The bass and drums are tight, and Idol's vocal work provides a brash counterpoint to the loud guitar work without overwhelming things. I have always loved this album, got it when it first came out.
For those who are looking for an authentic punk album here it is. Please note, there are several different versions of this album.
