Feb 11, Wdmoor rated it it was amazing Shelves: author-mark-blake , biography. Excellent book. Peter Grant was a fascinating man, and he loved his boys Plant, Page, Jones and Bonham. He called Bonham "the best mate I ever had" and he adored Jimmy Page. His management skills revolutionized the music industry. His darker impulses were exacerbated by a cocaine habit but he passionately loved those he was close to. People seemed to love and hate the man in equal measure.
Aug 06, Ellen rated it really liked it. Bit of a slow start and I only really got invested in it about a third of the way through, but I'm also not a big nonfiction reader so who knows. Was a bit meandering in the first half but second half was much tighter. Lots of great stories, and a very well written ending. Overall I really liked it and do recommend to fans of music, particularly rock, and especially fans of Led Zeppelin.
Apr 11, Alexander Wilson rated it really liked it Shelves: biography-entertainment. Here is the stories of the smashed hotel rooms, the groupies, the drug use, the tours and the all night parties that comprised the band Led Zeppelin in their heyday.
Told through the lens of its manager Peter Grant, a central figure regarding the band and a central figure, the book would argue, in rock music. As a fan, I found the story fascinating. Jul 01, Tom Erik Frydenlund rated it it was amazing. Jul 07, Tom rated it really liked it. Like most showbiz stories, it all turns grim once cocaine is the main sustenance for the parties involved.
Jan 26, Allan Heron rated it really liked it. As ever with Mark Blake's book this is a very well told and engrossing look at the life of Led Zeppelin's legendary manager.
It doesn't add too much to Chris Welch's earlier effort in terms of content though. It can also be viewed as a cautionary tale about drug abuse if you want to read it that way. Grant lost control of events, as he lost control to cocaine. Jan 12, Tronikyouth rated it it was amazing. Apr 01, Thomas Molesky rated it it was amazing. Excellent read - a must if you are a real Zeppelin fan. The song is a significant reworking of Charles Brown 's single "I Want to Go Home", and it retains the gospel flavor and call-and-response format; the song differs significantly in that its refrain "Bring it to me, bring your sweet lovin', bring it on home to me" is overtly secular.
A second, final take leaves Lou Rawls as the only echoing voice. The musicians also recorded " Having a Party " the same day. I fell in love with that smoky voice that took me straight back to the New York blues club scene where I used to hang out many, many years ago I am now 81, alas.
I found her version of "Shake Your Hips" on this album, but it was out of print. It was terrific, with great tracks like "One of Us". Now "Bring it on Home" is available once again, and has just arrived. It was certainly worth waiting for. One tiny niggle, however. She has her own label, Saguaro Road Records, where she produces along with her guitarist, Jack Petruzzelli. So I'm guessing that it was for financial reasons that the album comes in a cardboard sleeve. I suppose I'm set in my ways, but I much prefer a sturdy plastic jewel case.
Thank you for your feedback. Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again. Great band and performances. Joan is a natural blues singer. Excellent recording, production etc. While I truly like this album, I withhold one star since a little goes a long way, but that's just me. Blues-rock of this type is a half-century old so I've heard it all before and while this is exceptionally done, I find myself only listening to four or five songs before moving on to another album.
