A descent into an abyss of Leonard Cohen, The Smiths and penning terrible poetry is the only refuge against the taunting pop-perfection embodied in this cute Swedish chanteuse.
You'd sweep your cumbersome, floppy fringe to one side in disbelief if someone told you what a tortured existence the one-time queen of bubbly European indie-pop really leads. And a listen to The Cardigans' latest record in all its po-faced bitterness will have you scratching your head in confusion at the seeming paradox of the polished direction the rest of the band have taken contrasted with Persson's world-weary laments.
Peter Svensson and Magnus Sveningsson formed The Cardigans back in , enlisting untrained vocalist Nina Persson after playing hardcore for years-- inspired by a joint passion for heavy-metal music. Long Gone Before Daylight shows that classic rock runs in their blood, despite an inauguration of kitschy indie releases including 's acclaimed Life.
The follow-ups-- 's First Band on the Moon and 's Gran Turismo -- showed attitude and poise respectively, but this new album is less experimental musically. Perhaps the A-Camp project with Sparklehorse frontman Mark Linkous was supposed to be a kind of misery summer-camp for Persson to vent her unlucky-in-love frustrations. The voice is transparent which is very important to me, and the instruments are well separeted. The sound quality is not far behind my best sacd's.
The surround mix is very careful with mostly ambient sound in the rear speakers, it fits great with the music. Review by Mitch Kolby September 9, 1 of 1 found this review helpful. The surround mix is not very inventive with no directional use of the surrounds and a totally silent centre channel. It seems the stereo mix is also being fed to the rears, albeit at a much lower level. The surround track is nevertheless successful in immersing you in the music to a large degree. The improved resolution on the SACD makes it worth buying in any case, whether you listen in stereo or surround.
Highly recommended! The Cardigans include: Nina Persson vocals. The effect is distinctly cinematic, and patient listeners will be richly rewarded. The Cardigans. Add to Cart. How to Order.
